From Moerkoffie to Single Origin: The Perk & Bean Story

I grew up in South Africa drinking coffee that, by any specialty standard, was terrible - and I loved it anyway.

There was the weak and sickly sweet instant coffee of early childhood. There was my grandparents' stovetop enamel pot with its muslin filter, brewing thick, sludgy moerkoffie the way South Africans had for generations. There was my parents' percolator, gurgling and snoring on the kitchen counter every morning. As a teenager, I thought the "filter coffee" at restaurants was the height of sophistication.

It wasn't until I became a young adult and discovered the French press that I realized something was missing - not just from the coffee I'd grown up with, but from every cup I'd ever tried to make myself. Friends started gifting me equipment: an espresso machine, a pod machine, contraptions of every kind. None of it helped. I could barely make a decent cup for anyone.

So I made it my mission to actually understand coffee.

I read everything. I researched water alkalinity, brew temperatures, processing methods, altitude, soil, varietal differences. I learned why a natural-processed Ethiopian tastes so different from a washed Colombian. I learned what "single origin" actually means - and why it matters. And somewhere in all of that, frustration turned into fascination.

Perk & Bean grew out of that journey. It's a specialty coffee brand built for people who are curious - who want to taste the difference between a Sidama and a Yirgacheffe, who aren't afraid to experiment with grind size or brew ratio, and who believe a great cup of coffee is worth understanding.

We source single-origin coffees from specific regions, roast in small batches after ordering, and try to give you everything you need to brew them well. We're also building this as a place of knowledge - because the more you understand your coffee, the better it tastes.

From a stovetop pot in South Africa to your cup, wherever you are. Welcome to Perk & Bean.
