There's a good chance that the coffee you're drinking right now was grown on the slopes of a volcano. Not metaphorically. Not almost. On an actual volcano - one that may have erupted within living memory, or may still be active today.

This isn't a coincidence, and it isn't marketing. It's geology - and once you understand it, you'll never look at your morning cup quite the same way.

The Ring of Fire and the Bean Belt

To understand why so much great coffee comes from volcanic regions, you first need to know about two overlapping geographic phenomena.

The Coffee Belt is the band of tropical latitudes - roughly 25 degrees north to 30 degrees south of the equator - where temperature, rainfall, and altitude combine to make Arabica coffee cultivation possible. Nearly all of the world's coffee is grown within this zone.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped arc of intense tectonic activity that encircles the Pacific Ocean. It contains more than 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes - and it overlaps strikingly with the Coffee Belt. Major coffee-producing countries including Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Tanzania all sit within or adjacent to this volcanic zone.

This overlap is not accidental. The same geological forces that create volcanoes also create the high-altitude, mineral-rich, well-drained terrain in which Arabica coffee thrives.

What Volcanoes Actually Do to Soil

When a volcano erupts, it releases lava, ash, and what geologists call tephra - airborne volcanic rock fragments of all sizes. Over time, as these materials weather and break down, they create a unique soil type called Andisols (from the Japanese word ando, meaning "dark soil"). Andisols are among the most fertile soils on Earth, and they are exceptionally well-suited to coffee.

Here's what makes them so special:

•        Mineral richness. Volcanic ash deposits are packed with phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and other minerals essential for plant growth - and they directly influence flavor. As coffee plants absorb these compounds, they affect the chemical makeup of the coffee cherry, shaping its acidity, sweetness, aroma, and overall complexity. Different volcanoes have different mineral compositions, which is one reason why a coffee from Costa Rica tastes so different from one grown in Ethiopia, even at the same altitude and roast level.

•        Volcanic glass. One of the more fascinating ingredients in volcanic soil is volcanic glass - a chemically unstable material formed when ash cools rapidly. As it slowly decomposes over years and decades, it releases additional minerals and soluble salts into the soil, providing a slow-release fertilizer of remarkable complexity.

•        Self-replenishing fertility. Many of the world's coffee-growing volcanoes erupt on cycles of decades to centuries, depositing fresh tephra onto surrounding farmland. The soil is essentially being "topped up" with nutrients on a geological timescale — protecting existing Andisols from erosion and maintaining their fertility without synthetic inputs.

•        Drainage and porosity. Volcanic soil is naturally porous and free-draining, which prevents the coffee plant's roots from becoming waterlogged. Healthy drainage reduces stress on the plant, leading to more consistent cherry development and cleaner flavor in the cup.

Altitude: The Other Gift Volcanoes Give

Volcanoes don't just create good soil - they create mountains. And altitude is perhaps the single most important factor in specialty coffee quality.

Arabica coffee thrives between 1,000 and 2,000 meters above sea level. At these elevations, temperatures are cooler and the air is thinner, which slows the maturation of coffee cherries dramatically. A cherry that takes weeks longer to ripen has more time to develop complex sugars, organic acids, and aromatic compounds. The result is a denser, more flavorful bean - which is why high-grown coffee consistently commands a premium, and why you'll see altitude listed prominently on specialty coffee packaging.

Volcanoes create exactly this terrain. Their steep slopes push farms to the precise elevations where quality peaks - and the rugged topography creates microclimates and variations in sun exposure that allow subtle, terroir-driven flavor differences to emerge. Coffee grown on the northern face of a volcano can taste meaningfully different from coffee grown on its southern face - in the same way that different sides of a wine-producing hillside produce distinct bottles.

The Volcanoes Behind Your Coffee

Costa Rica - Poás, Arenal, and Irazú

Costa Rica has seven historically active volcanoes. The famous Poás Volcano, which has erupted as recently as 2017, sits at the heart of the country's Central Valley coffee region. The slopes around Arenal - which erupted continuously from 1968 to 2010, one of the ten longest volcanic eruptions on Earth since 1750 - and Irazú produce some of Central America's most balanced, fruit-forward Arabica. Colombia - The Andes volcanic arc

Colombia's celebrated coffee-growing regions sit along the Andes mountain chain, shaped by one of the most tectonically active zones on the continent. Tanzania - Kilimanjaro, Meru, and Ol Doinyo Lengai

All of Tanzania's volcanoes are surrounded by Arabica plantations. Mount Kilimanjaro - the iconic snow-capped peak standing 5,895 meters above sea level - anchors the Moshi coffee-growing region. Nearby Mount Meru last erupted in 1910. And Ol Doinyo Lengai, in the Rift Valley, is currently active: the same volcano whose ash fertilizes the grasslands that sustain the famous wildebeest migration. Papua New Guinea - The Pacific volcanic arc

Papua New Guinea sits directly on the Ring of Fire, with dozens of active volcanoes. The volcanic loam soil of Chimbu Province — where our PNG single origin is grown — is a product of this ongoing geological activity, giving the coffee its characteristic soft sweetness and honeyed complexity.

 

Guatemala - Three volcanoes over Antigua

The Antigua coffee region is famously surrounded by three volcanoes: Volcán de Fuego (still active, erupting as recently as 2023), Volcán Acatenango, and Volcán de Agua. The combination of volcanic soil, altitude, and cool air channelled between the peaks creates conditions that produce some of Central America's most sought-after cups.

 

Hawaii - Kona and Mauna Loa

Kona coffee, one of the world's most expensive, grows on the slopes of Mauna Loa — an active shield volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. The rich volcanic soil and the afternoon mist that provides natural shade make this one of the most distinctive micro-regions in coffee.

 

Honduras - The Marcala highlands

The La Paz region, home to the Cafe Organics Marcala cooperative that produces our Honduras single origin, sits within the Mesoamerican volcanic arc, where millennia of volcanic activity have created the clay mineral soils that give this coffee its clean, structured character.

 

Indonesia - 17,000 volcanic islands

Indonesia is made up of roughly 17,000 islands, most of them volcanically formed — making it one of the most dramatically volcanic coffee-growing nations on Earth. The islands of Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and Flores each produce coffee with a distinct character shaped by their specific volcanic terroir.

 

The Risk Farmers Accept

It would be incomplete to talk about volcanic coffee without acknowledging what farmers who grow it actually live with.

Growing coffee near an active volcano means accepting real and ongoing risk. Eruptions can destroy crops instantly. Ash falls can damage harvests. Evacuations upend lives and livelihoods. The farmers of Antigua in Guatemala and the slopes of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania work in landscapes that are geologically alive - and they do so because the soil rewards them with some of the finest agricultural conditions on Earth, and because for many communities, coffee is the only viable livelihood the land supports.
